Servicing a Breitling Chronograph

Here we have a Breitling chronograph which was recently given for service. We like to fully strip the whole watch when servicing any watch and a chronograph is no exception. These are great watches to work on, well manufactured to an extremely high standard.

Operating the start and stop pusher will turn the pillar wheel which will effectively change the position of the various chronograph components.

You will notice that the balance also has an incabloc shock system. We take this apart and clean each component completely before oiling.

When we service these we will always test the movement for at least 72 hours with the chronograph engaged.

You can see on the image to the right the various chronograph wheels and components.

One crucial part of servicing a chronograph is to make sure the pitch is correct between each engaging chronograph wheel. The pitch is basically how deep the teeth of the wheels mesh with each other.

We continue to remove all the parts before running the parts through a four stage ultrasonic cleaning machine.

Once this is done all parts are inspected for wear and then assembled with a correct oiling regime applied. Adjustments are made to the chronograph components then its regulated and tested.
